Proverbs 22:3 NLT

India: Family swept away in flash flood

What started as a family picnic here in central India quickly turns into a nightmare. A wall of water caused by torrential rains rushes down this river. Most are able to scramble free of the deluge, but one family of five doesn’t make it out in time. As the rushing waters surround them, they cling to each other. But eventually the torrent sweeps them off their feet, and all five are carried away. A search operation was underway, but they...

Newborn Wildlife Abandoned Because of Heat, Drought
The extreme heat and persistent drought seen in much of Texas is taking its toll on wildlife, with deer, birds and other animals abandoning or unable to feed their young. Pregnant does are having problems carrying fawns to term, and most of them born prematurely aren't surviving, according to the Texas AgriLife Extension Service. Other does are abandoning their newborns because drought-induced malnutrition has robbed them of their ability to produce milk.

Credit rating agencies braced for US downgrade amid political stalemate

Expectations that ratings agencies will strip the US of its top notch credit rating because of the impasse over its borrowing needs were raised on Monday amid little sign of agreement between President Obama and his Republican opponents. With a deadline of 2 August for an increase in the $14.3tn (£9tn) borrowing limit, Gary Jenkins, head of fixed income research at brokers Evolution, said there was a "high probability" of the Standard & Poor's rating agency downgrading the US from its coveted triple A rating. "Probability of the debt ceiling...

There’s a hidden clock that underlies every process of every living thing — from when our cells start dividing to how quickly we age. Researchers at Darpa, the Pentagon’s extreme science agency, believes they can find it, using a mash-up of biology, code-cracking, mathematics and computer science. If the effort succeeds — and, boy, is that a big if — the recently announced Biochronicity program could...
