Proverbs 22:3 NLT

A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.

Iran Navy to Hold War Games Near Crucial Sea Lanes

Iran put neighbors on notice Thursday that it was about to conduct vast naval exercises in the Arabian Sea, including war games near the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping lane for international oil traffic. The exercises, to start Saturday and last 10 days, are Iran’s first since May 2010 and were described by the official news media as the largest the country ever planned. The scale of the maneuvers appeared intended to demonstrate Iran’s military capabilities as it faces increased isolation over its suspect nuclear energy program. The exercises are bound to put Iranian warships close to vessels of the United States Fifth Fleet, based in Bahrain, which patrols some of the same waters, including the Strait of Hormuz. About one-third of the world’s oil tanker shipments pass through the strait, which the United...

Christchurch rocked by earthquakes

A series of earthquakes have terrified many already-frazzled Christchurch residents this afternoon, starting with a 5.8 magnitude tremor at 1.58pm. It was followed by a 6.0 magnitude aftershock at 3.18pm, centred 10km east of Christchurch in South New Brighton. There was also a 5.3 magnitude quake at 2.06pm and a 5.0 at 4.50pm. Initial reports said one person had received minor injuries, although St John had responded to 19 earthquake-related emergency calls in and around Christchurch. They ranged from complaints of chest pain and...

Mystery space ball drops on Namibia

The hollow ball, which has a circumference of 43 inches, was found near a village in the north of Namibia some 480 miles from the capital Windhoek, according to police forensics director Paul Ludik. Locals had heard several small explosions a few days beforehand, he said. With a diameter of 14 inches, the ball has a rough surface and appears to consist of "two halves welded together". It was made of a "metal alloy known to man" and weighed 13 pounds, said Ludik. It was found 59ft from its landing spot, a hole one foot deep and 12ft wide.

'Too late' to contain research into deadly bird flu strain, warn scientists

Two scientific journals have come under pressure not to publish findings of research on the mutant strains of H5N1 over fears that terrorists could use the information to create bioweapons. However, scientists claim that the plea from the US National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB) comes too late because details of the research have already been shared among flu experts. “This horse is out of the barn,” Professor Richard Ebright, a molecular biologist and biodefence expert at Rutgers University in Piscataway,..

'Birther' bid to challenge Obama's right to be president rejected

Opponents of President Obama can't take him to court to answer their claims that he wasn't born in the United States, a federal appeals court ruled Thursday. None of the dozens of so-called "birthers" who filed a federal lawsuit against Obama has the right to sue the president because none has suffered any injury that the court could heal with a ruling, a three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals said in upholding a lower court's dismissal of their lawsuit. Among those challenging Obama's eligibility for the presidency is Wiley Drake,..

Voters leaving Republican, Democratic parties in droves

WASHINGTON – More than 2.5 million voters have left the Democratic and Republican parties since the 2008 elections, while the number of independent voters continues to grow. A USA TODAY analysis of state voter registration statistics shows registered Democrats declined in 25 of the 28 states that register voters by party. Republicans dipped in 21 states, while independents increased in 18 states. The trend is acute in states that are key to next year's presidential race. In the eight swing states that register voters by party, Democrats...

A little girl believed to have been killed in the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami is reportedly alive and has been reunited with her parents. Japan tsunami debris hitting B.C. shores in ecological red flag for West Coast beaches

Japanese lumber and household goods have begun appearing on the British Columbia coast in what many locals think is the vanguard of a wave of debris from last March’s Japanese tsunami that will eventually clog West Coast beaches with cars, boats and even waterlogged houses. “I found more debris...
