Colorado secede, fed up with laws: North Colorado to become 51st U.S. state?
If Colorado secedes, the rural and predominantly Republican counties of the north and northeastern regions of Colorado would become North Colorado, a 51st U.S. state that apparently is fed up with the left-leaning laws that Democrats have passed so far this year. “One corner of rural Colorado is so fed up with the leftward lurch of our state that county leaders are talking secession by creating the 51st state,” reported Colorado’s News Leader 9News on June 6, 2013.
The northern Colorado counties wanting to secede from the rest of Colorado include Weld, Morgan, Logan, Sedgwick, Phillips, Washington, Yuma and Kit Carson counties.
On Thursday, Weld County Commissioner Sean Conway who is leading the action for the secession said that the reason for forming the new state of North Colorado is that “our very way of life is under attack.”
When talking about “our way of life,” Sean Conway is not only referring to Wednesday’s signing of Senate Bill 252 by Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper which will increase energy rates for rural Colorado, but also several other laws that that were passed in the Democratic-controlled legislature this year.
Besides laws about energy rates, laws about the treatment of livestock, the regulation of oil and gas production, and laws in regard to gun control are more than what rural northern Colorado is willing to take.
“I have never seen a legislative session like this,” said Sean Conway. “They ignore us. They don’t listen to us. It started with the gun control bills and came to a head this week with S.B. 252 being signed.”
According to Sean Conway, about 10 counties have expressed their interest in a secession from Colorado and forming a new state.
In order to secede from Colorado, voters in each one of the northern rural counties would have to vote in November for the idea. The statehood would have to be approved by the state legislature, the governor, and Congress.

Residents in Weld County, Colo., will vote this November to join eight other of the state’s counties and form America’s 51st state — Northern Colorado.
“It started very informally,” said Weld County Commissioner Sean Conway of how the issue was broached at a state meeting of county commissioners in recent weeks, according to the International Business Times. “There was a group of citizens who were and still are very frustrated with being ignored and politically disenfranchised by the political leadership in the state capitol.”

Mr. Conway cited other successful secessions in U.S. history such as Maine, Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia.

If the county referendum passes, it will go before the Colorado State Senate for vote. If it passes there, it heads to Congress for the final say.
“If the voters of those counties vote that way, one thing about democracy that you have to respect is the vote of the people,” said State House Speaker Mark Farrandino told the Coloradoan.

The Denver Post reports that a proposal to separate Weld, Morgan, Logan, Sedgwick, Phillips, Washington, Yuma and Kit Carson counties from the rest of the state was hatched at a meeting of county commissioners last week.
Weld County commissioners Sean Conway, Mike Freeman and Doug Rademacher said they will conduct public meetings and decide whether to draft a ballot measure by Aug. 1., according to a report in The Greeley Tribune.
The U.S. Constitution requires that Legislatures must first approve any state that is to be created within its jurisdiction.
Commissioners said Thursday that failed legislative efforts to crack down on oil and gas, as well as increases in rural renewable energy standards were "the straws that broke the camel's back."
Conway told the Tribune that Weld County's main economic drivers, agriculture and energy, are under attack, even though those sectors contribute significantly to the state's economy. He said the county's return on its financial contributions to the state are minimal.
Commissioners are also concerned about the lack of funding for infrastructure and education and believe the split would allow them to leverage financial investments from energy companies in the region, the newspaper reported.
Rep. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., whose district would be included in the split, said in a statement last week that he is sympathetic to the commissioners' concerns and doesn't blame them for wanting to form a new state, The Tribune reported.
"The people of rural Colorado are mad, and they have every right to be," Gardner said. "The governor and his Democrat colleagues in the statehouse have assaulted our way of life, and I don't blame these people one bit for feeling attacked and unrepresented by the leaders of our state."
Gov. John Hickenlooper's spokesman Eric Brown said in a statement obtained by the paper that "background checks on gun sales, increasing renewable energy and supporting responsible development of oil and gas are popular with rural and urban voters."
