Did the end of the euro begin Sunday? If you look at Greece it certainly seems like it.
Greece is a nation today simply because the rest of the Euro Union, aided and abetted by the International Monetary Fund, the U.S. Treasury Department and the European Central Bank, bailed it out four times in the last six years. The Greeks were put under a harsh economic austerity program in order to receive the bailouts and debt reduction necessary to keep the Greek state alive.
However, the financial wizards allowed Greece to maintain its status as an independent government. Sunday Greece held another in a long string of elections forced by the coalition governments' inability to get and keep a majority voting bloc. The radical left Syriza party won the election as its' leader, Alexis Tsipras, vowed to eliminate the austerity programs and revive the 'economy.'
Where is the Greek economy? If it was the free-wheeling, spendthrift policies that led to the bailouts originally, then Greece has no private economy to fall back on. Greece, once the bastion of free citizenry in the Old World, has resorted wholesale to the socialist state which led to its financial ruin. There is a lesson there for the rest of the world's socialist leaning governments.
Tsipras won control in a landslide. The Greeks, accustomed to government taking care of them, supported the one person who promised them the most for the least amount of effort. Long term the Greeks just eliminated themselves as an independent nation.
Without austerity forced from without, the Greeks will soon find themselves ripe for enslavement by policies enacted from within. What good now is the 70% reduction in Greek bond values in 2011? Those who understood the Greek mindset knew even the 70% reduction of acknowledged debt was only the first step. Greece had no ability to even pay the 30% without the continued support from outside sources.
To fully understand the problem, look no further than the Euro Union policies.
Germany's Angela Merkel and France's Christine LeGarde were the chief constructosr of the bond reduction and bailout program. Without their support the ECB would have been in dire straits in its efforts to hold the fiat coalition together then. Now the Greeks have spit in Merkel's face. LeGarde move on to lead the IMF and is allegedly no longer concerned by local politics.
Tsipras declared, "Democracy will return to Greece. The verdict is clear: We will bring an end to the vicious circle of austerity."
He just stated mob-rule is the new norm. Democracy, as applied in its strictest sense, is the bigger mob always gets its way. That is no way to grow an economy and leads to more austerity. Democracy works best in a nation where there is a vital working economy to wreck. It has never worked long in a place where the economy is already a mess. The second part of his statement is even worse. If he ends austerity on a vote, Greece has nothing to replace the fiat it will lose from its neighbors. The country will rot even further.
Since 2009 Greece's financial woes have grown steadily worse. Corrupt government is the worst enemy of the nation that founded free elections. With the imposed austerity program, the anemic Greek economy has shrunk by another 25% over the past five years. Nothing is working in Athens including the people getting government handouts.
The only way Tsipras can hold the nation together is by eliminating government spending until the economy improves beyond the current level. Then government can take its tax from the growth and leave a base untouched to serve as a foundation for future growth.
There is not a politician in the world today who will agree to that status. It is why the global economy, per capita, is drooping.
Greece is waiting on a 7 billion-euro bailout needed to keep the government running. The country owes billions in additional debt in the next six months. Tsipras has demanded creditors write off 50% of Greece's current 319 billion euro public debt to allow more time for his programs to take effect. That leaves initial creditors holding paper worth about 15% of what was the face value--just from two reductions. Even the U.S. housing market had better face value in the derivatives meltdown in 2007 and we know what that recession has done here.
As long as Tsipras is asking, why not just say none of the paper is any good? That at least would be honest. Tsipras is a politician and wants to get the still-standing creditors to get used to the idea the Greek debt is never going to be paid. In fact he would be willing to have the creditors pay for the privilege of holding worthless Greek debt if he could figure a way to get an agreement on that idea.
The Greek election could prove the snapping point for the Euro Union. It could also mark the end of the U.S. 2015 economic projections.
If the EU dies, it will damage the U.S. 2015 economic prospects even more. There is speculation among the economist elite circles even now that the EU and the American economies could collectively hit a deflationary spiral--the same thing as happened in 1929--in 2015.
Here's the pain coming. Just wait a bit, savor the sensations about to come to fully extract the last vestige to its fullest extent. And thank the Greeks.

Hi steve, I live in metro Detroit and what I saw today made my heart sink.
I was driving south on a very busy street, coming north on that same street
I passed three police cars with their lights all flashing as they escorted
a flatbed truck that was hauling a Bradley fighting vehicle. No tarps or
covers were upon it, it was exposed for all to see. I'm an Iraq war vet so
I immediately knew what it was, but have no clue where it was headed. This
road is three lanes one way, they were traveling only 10mph or so and they
took up all three lanes and would not let any cars pass them. Steve I've
lived here my whole life and have never seen anything like this before, it
was so blatantly on display it seemed as if they wanted everyone to see it,
or maybe they just don't care who sees what anymore. I don't know. But I
do know that I choose to fear The Lord, and not to fear man and his armored
