Corporate Profits New MIA
Just in case you missed the latest news beyond the President's comparison of Christianity of 1,000 years ago to Islamist terrorism today, corporate America is in a world of hurt. Profits keep falling.
Yeah, yeah, yeah...the stock market is up but the valuation there has nothing to do with honest value based on company management. What is not being reported by the MSM is corporate profits are about 5% down, across the spectrum, for the fourth quarter of 2014 when compared to 2013.
What you do hear is analysts are enthusiastic about the 4.1% economic growth for the last three quarters of 2014. That was accomplished with smoke and mirrors on the back of the Federal Reserve's overactive printing press and had little to do with actual increase in profits. You see the analysts failed to account for the upcoming adjustments for bad decisions on that growth before the first quarter of 2015 is done.
Those exempt items or adjusted items in accounting practices which are done to cover the massive mistakes of corporate VIPs who merely look at stock prices are about to come due. This means the reported profits will go down. Another factor distorting company's value is the buy-back programs of many corporations of their own stock put up for sale. CEOs do this because most of their annual income is derived from stock options and the value of stock is a primary concern. Many companies use borrowed or leveraged funds to buy back their available stock.
The biggest transgressor in this area was Exxon Mobile. Just Wednesday it was revealed Exxon will slash its buy back funds by two-thirds--to one billion dollars this quarter. With $87 billion in 2015 revenues, Exxon used $12 billion to buy back its own stock in 2014. Since the company shares averaged about $100 during 2014 that means it bought back close to 120 million shares. Just to boost the value of the stock portfolio.
Chevron went a step further announcing it will completely suspend its buyback program in 2015.
There is a distinct disconnect between the value of company stock and the profitability of the company which wasn't always the case.
David Stockman, former White House Budget Chief for Reagan, stated the problem tersely in his Contra Corner blog. "To say stocks are seriously overvalued is an understatement."
He points to the Fed's zero-interest rate policy which has facilitated the market's rise as a leading factor. The policy has allowed companies to borrow to buy back available shares without cost as the taxpayer is going to have to carry the extra load when the bill comes due while companies count profits when the recovery occurs.
More sobering yet is other leading economists are starting to come to the same conclusion as Stockman.
But the monkey in the works is the actual workforce participation rate combined with the President's proposed Immigration Amnesty program. The President wants to allow 'undocumented workers' to file for missed tax refunds like Aid to Families with Dependent Children, Earned Income Credit, Child Care, etc. But here's the catch, if the undocumented worker owes taxes for a year, he doesn't have to put in for that period, only in the time frames when his tax return would show a refund does he have to file.
Where's the line to renounce my citizenship?
I know a bunch of Americans who would like to glom onto a deal like this but can't--because they are Americans and not undocumented workers! Why aren't Americans given the same leeway as undocumented workers? Actually why aren't Americans given more leeway than undocumented workers?
But the bill will come home to roost on the weakening U.S. workforce participation rate. Americans are being forced out by companies who can lower costs (boosting profits) by now hiring aliens who have work permits. These people come at a much lower cost to payroll, putting another squeeze on the American middle class.
The problem is this further cuts into American consumer cash flow, distorts the actual number of Americans in the work force and puts even more downward pressure on the economic structure of the country. Then toss in the fact the effective marginal tax rate could rise to 67% under the President's proposed budget excesses for future government program expansion.
Alarmingly, new business formation is at a 35-year low, continuing a trend of negative business numbers that started in 2012. This is a definitive indication of a culture change.
Lower productivity should have lowered the market value of stocks but didn't. Lower consumer income should have pushed profits lower and affected the stock markets but didn't.
The Fed printing press floated the financial sector, including Wall Street, on a sea of red ink. The sea will last until people lose faith in the currency's value or the Fed decides it has enough worthless U.S. notes. Then a tidal wave of trouble will engulf the financial sector, trouble that could mean the end of America as it is currently structured.
But that was what Obama promised, wasn't it, with his "fundamental transformation of America"?
