In a game of poker, bluffs are seldom called. In the political arena bluffs are often called. But in the politicized economic realm, nobody really knows because bluffs have seldom been made in this arena.
That is about to change, particularly in Europe. On one hand you have Greece threatening to default on its debt and leave the euro and from the western seat you have Great Britain threatening to leave the Euro Union. Both could have catastrophic results for the euro currency and the stability of Europe.
What borders on the insane is the leaders of both countries trying to explain what their respective defections will mean to the shaky alliances while trying to extract more concessions from their neighbors. In a real world, both Greece and Britain are negotiating with empty pockets as both have already put all their chips into the pot and can't afford another raise from another player.
Greece, as has been documented, is trying to renegotiate its debt load. To that end the Greeks elected Prime Minister Alex Tsipras who promised an end of the austerity program his predecessor had put into place to get Greece a cash infusion three years ago.
Tsipras wrote an op-ed piece to the French newspaper Le Monde in which he claimed any intransigence wasn't the fault of his four-month old administration. "The lack of an agreement so far is not due to the supposed intransigent, uncompromising and incomprehensible Greek stance. It is due to the insistence of certain institutional actors on submitting absurd proposals and displaying a total indifference to the recent democratic choice of the Greek people."
His article immediately drew fire from the Germans. A German lawmaker, Volker Kauder, claimed Tsipras' government must adhere to the reforms agreed to before he took power. Meanwhile, an international officer with the IMF said other creditors were discussing a deal to be presented to Greece as a way of ending that impasse.
But it a condemnation of modern society that a debt agreed to can allegedly be erased by a subsequent election or a coup without apparent consequences to that nation.
But as much as Greece's latest raise has hackles rising, the side bet issued by Britain is more threatening. PM David Cameron is trying to get his nation to say yes on a referendum to stay in the EU. The average Brit is not yet sold on that idea.
But Britain is, if anything, in more dire financial straits than Greece. The Brits reneged on their national debt, mostly from WWII, six decades ago and despite the relative appearance of economic strength, legally have a huge amount of unrecognized debt sitting in the vaults of the Bank of England. How long that debt can go unrepaid is a sticking point with many former English creditors.
But without an English presence, the EU is not nearly as formidable as it is with the English.
The tit-for-tat bluff game is about to come to an end. The loss of Greece would be a flea bite to the euro. Greece has nothing of real economic power to replace. But the loss of England to the Euro Union--even though England clings to the pound as its official currency--would be a crushing blow.
The Guardian's Heather Stewart wrote: [Some] are warning that the global community has failed to learn the lessons of the Greek debt crisis--or even of Argentina's default in 2001, the consequences of which are still being contested furiously on both sides of the Atlantic." This unresolved debt by leadership is causing the populations of every country to take a sterner look at their nation's involvement in multinational dealings.
What is ironic in all this is while the central bankers of the world are in a race to degrade the value of their currency, it is the surging value of the dollar that is pointed to as a detriment in Europe's problems according to many economists. The dollar reached multi-year highs against an array of currencies in the past six weeks. oil prices continue to stagger near six-year lows and the expected Fed move on interest rates is still looming. This has other nations scrambling to fill their coffers with something besides false promises. In many respects every day since Nov. 1, 2007 has been wasted economically.
Stewart report Ann Pettifor of Policy Research in Macroeconomics as saying, "We are going to have another financial crisis. We are back to where we started [2007] and, for me, that is really frightening."
The American consumer is reflecting her fear. In its latest report the Commerce Department showed consumer spending continues to hover below anticipated levels. As consumer spending still represents 70% of America's economic activity, an increase in this sector is necessary for the economy to run better.
The question remains on how this is to be accomplished when the U.S. workforce participation rate is showing no signs of improving.
If there is a shakeup on the Continental side of the Atlantic, will it be a ripple when the wave gets to America or a tsunami that will crash everything gained over the past seven years in light of a weakening consumer base?

In January, police were caught on camera brutally dragging Dent from his vehicle, then choking, beating, and tasing him. Dent had no criminal history and did not appear to be resisting arrest in the footage. Dent was charged with assault, resisting arrest, and possession of cocaine after the violent beating that left him hospitalized for two days. All charges against Dent have been dropped. A video later emerged of an officer placing what appeared to be cocaine from his pocket in Dent’s car.... Now, Inkster is set to add a charge for all taxpayers on July 1, a hike that’s expected to bring in $6.45 million to cover the costs of the lawsuit.

Just over half (53%) said they could “fairly easily handle such an expense.” But for 47% of respondents, $400 was a tougher problem to handle. Within this group, 14% said they simply couldn’t cover it.
