Credit Suisse The Sequel: "Probability Of The Largest Disorderly Default Loss In History On March 20 Has Increased"
A week ago we presented an excerpt from Credit Suisse's most excellent piece "The Flaw" - merely the latest in one of the best overviews of the neverending Greek soap opera by William Porter. Yet every soap opera eventually ends. Although when it comes to Nielsen ratings, the denouement is usually a whimper. In the case of Greece, it will be anything but. Yet listening to the daily cacafony of din from Europe's leaders, who are likely more clueless than the average reader as to what is really going on, one may be left with the impression that there is a.../
Moody's ponders rate cut of UBS, Goldman, Morgan Stanley
UBS AG, Credit Suisse Group AG and Morgan Stanley’s credit ratings may be cut by as many as three levels by Moody’s Investors Service, which is reviewing 17 banks and securities firms with global capital markets operations. Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Deutsche Bank AG, JPMorgan Chase & Co.and Citigroup Inc. are among companies that may be downgraded by two levels, Moody’s said in a statement, adding that the “guidance is indicative only.” Moody’s today cut some European insurers’ ratings based on risks stemming from the region’s.../
Pentagon’s Project ‘Avatar’: Same as the Movie, but With Robots Instead of Aliens
Soldiers practically inhabiting the mechanical bodies of androids, who will take the humans’ place on the battlefield. Or sophisticated tech that spots a powerful laser ray, then stops it from obliterating its target. If you’ve got Danger Room’s taste in movies, you’ve probably seen both ideas on the big screen. Now Darpa, the Pentagon’s far-out research arm, wants to bring ‘em into the real world. In the agency’s $2.8 billion budget for 2013, unveiled on Monday, they’ve allotted $7 million for a project titled “Avatar.” The project’s ultimate goal, not surprisingly,../
Iris recognition gates scrapped at two airports
Hailed as the way of cutting immigration queues at airports the Iris machines have been a source of frustration for passengers for years. The machines are being withdrawn immediately from Birmingham and Manchester airports, where they were introduced in 2005, but will remain in use at Gatwick and Heathrow for the duration of the Olympics before being scrapped. The enrolment schemes have already closed. The Iris scheme first introduced in London in 2004. According to the Government it was a “watertight” scheme which would eliminate fraud.../
FBI seeks developers for app to track suspicious social media posts, sparking privacy concerns
The FBI is getting in on the law enforcement app game on the heels of a controversial data mining project by the Homeland Security Department. Documents recently posted on line seek industry input to develop the equivalent of a web alert system. “I think what you are looking at is a Google news feed specifically targeted for law enforcement, focusing on their specific needs,” Frank Ciluffo, who leads George Washington University’s Homeland Security Policy Institute, told Fox News..“We're on our mobile phones and we're on our various iPhones,../
Drug-releasing microchip passes first test in humans
(Health.com) -- It sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie: A patient visits a doctor's office and, after a brief surgical procedure, walks away with a microchip under her skin that delivers medication in precisely timed and measured doses. That scenario doesn't seem so futuristic anymore. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) announced today that they have successfully completed the first trial of a drug-releasing microchip in humans. The results were published on the website of the journal Science Translational Medicine.../
MI5 files: Was Chaplin really a Frenchman and called Thornstein?
Intelligence officers could find no trace of the actor's birth in Britain despite Chaplin always claiming he was born in London in 1889. The mystery surrounding his origins emerged when the US authorities asked MI5 to look into the comic actor's background after he left America in 1952 under a cloud of suspicion over his communist links. But British officers could find no birth certificate and the earliest official record was a passport issued in 1920. They investigated suggestions he was born in Fontainebleau, near Paris, or nearby Melun, while the.../
China Warns on Growing Water Shortages
Chinese officials have issued a stark warning over growing water shortages, saying the situation is worsening every day and that more than two-thirds of cities have a water shortage. The world’s second-largest economy, is struggling to deal with the costs of the immense environmental degradation that has accompanied economic growth.
