Russia can turn US to ‘radioactive ash’: Kremlin-backed journalist A Kremlin-backed journalist issued a stark warning to the United States about Moscow’s nuclear capabilities on Sunday, as the White House threatened sanctions over Crimea’s referendum on union with Russia. ”Russia is the only country in the world that is realistically capable of turning the United States into radioactive ash,” television presenter Dmitry Kiselyov said on

Russia expected to move swiftly to annex Crimea as poll closes With Crimea’s referendum now over, Russia is expected to move ahead swiftly to annex the peninsula, despite the vast damage such a step could do to its relations with the west. In doing so, it will be entering uncharted waters. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia has not absorbed any new territory, and it is

Mark Bonifacio/New York Daily News
City Harvest, a charity focused on fresh foods that are 'rescued' from supermarkets and restaurants, recently brought its mobile food market to the Stapleton Houses in Staten Island. Dozens of people lined up as a tractor-trailer unloaded 15,540 pounds of carrots, potatoes, grapefruits and apples, enough for as many as 400 households.
Hunger crisis: Charities are strained as nearly 1 in 5 New Yorkers depend on aid for food - In a city of wealth, 1.4 million people rely on a network of 1,000 food pantries and soup kitchens to eat. That's an increase of 200,000 people in five years, and the city's programs are struggling to keep up with that need./

Obama's Thought Process Whacks
Economic Recovery
Progressives live in a different plane of existence than those of us on
planet Earth. The Progressive disconnect with reality may very well have reached
its zenith in Barack Obama.
Everything the man does, says or thinks is filtered through the lens of
"what should be" rather than what "is". Whether the topic is minimum wage,
overtime pay, health insurance, income inequality or carbon dioxide increases,
Obama seemingly comes out on the wrong side of scientific evidence, economic
reality or common sense every time. America is suffering.
For instance, take the President's words earlier this week when, in answer
to the concerns about the rising cost of health care and the impact it is having
on disposable incomes, he replied, "People have to prioritize their spending
better. They have to turn off the cable services and give up their cell phones
because health care may not seem like it but it is a more important expense. The
Health Care Act just gives them an aid in prioritizing their choices."
Sounds frighteningly like the rationale used by Hitler, Stalin and Mao to
obliterate those who didn't agree with them. But that is Progressive thought
process personified.
In another action direct to the Labor Department, Obama has mandated
employers provide overtime pay for another large chunk of salaried people.
Businesses cannot absorb that cost. For years I was an salaried employee. If I
worked 50 hours in a week or if I worked 30 hours in a week I got the same
pay because I was salaried, not hourly; I didn't watch the clock
while working but my employer expected the job to get done and didn't have to
stand over me with a club while the job was in progress.
To most individuals, salary means you work as long as it takes to get the
job done. When the job is done, then you can party. If the employer does not
provide enough work to fill a full-time position that is his fault, not the
employee's. If he provides too much work or demands too much result for the
salary, the employee is free to seek other employment. Salaried positions also
carry the luxury of getting paid while sick or on vacation. Hourly employees do
not have those perks but they do get paid overtime for extra work required 'to
get the job done.'
The ideal of garnering more reward for the work done is admirable, but that
is not how it works in the business world. If you consistently over-perform, you
are usually given a promotion (and then have to meet the standards of that
position and it's higher compensation). If you consistently under-perform, you
are axed. Normally the employer and employee chat about performance problems but
the employer's wishes hold sway. The employee is free to look for a job
elsewhere if the current situation does not suit him.
George Bush last raised the overtime issue on salaried employees. He
exempted "manager" and "supervisor" positions, but altering the terms of
employment was just as wrong-headed then as it is now. To get overtime in a
salaried position diminishes the meaning of salaried. Bush's actions may have
led directly to the recession but Obama's are prolonging the misery.
He talks a good talk but then his walk totally destroys the good intentions
of the talk. Business does not respond well to the flow of red tape Washington
issues along with the red ink of its debt.
Obama's end run to provide salaried employees overtime pay is in direct
response to the blockage of his proposed minimum pay raise. But it doesn't fit
economic reality.
Today, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics claiming only 62.8% of Americans
over 16 are "in the workforce", raising the wages of those in the workforce
isn't going to do anything to get the other 3 in 8 back into the pool. Columnist
Neal Asbury made the case today's workforce participation rate is equal to what
it was in 1978 under Jimmy Carter. Not true. Back then post-high school students
were counted as "in the workforce" not so today where those enrolled in college
or job training courses are not in the pool. He's comparing percentages when
the manner in which those percentages are figured has been drastically
altered.
Government actions like the stimulus, TARP and QE programs DO NOT
HELP the economy. They merely help those in the financial sector and
cover-up the acne scars in the rest of the economy. Real improvement is
missing.
But the Progressives cling to feel-good emotion of global warming so our
economy ships jobs where the manufacturing burden is less. Progressives continue
to see a world that is contrary to what economic law demands.
This battle between what is wanted to be and what is actually tangible,
continues to put massive roadblocks in the President's claim he "is there for
the 99%."
The 1% he claims to be against, have moved rapidly ahead under his
policies. The Fed's printing press yielded an average of $164,000 in bonuses to
Wall Street workers last year while the average pay per American slipped
slightly.
Somehow he can't see that and his supporters can't see it either. They
listen to the words and watch the theatrics, not seeing what lies outside the
spotlight's glare.
In that regard, it is evident America is following the economically
destructive track of the Progressive thought process.
"I have sworn on the altar of God eternal hostility
to every form of tyranny over the mind of man."--Thomas
Jefferson
