Virulent H5 avian influenza strains have spread to 14 states in five months and affected about 24 million birds so far, mostly egg-laying hens and turkeys, according to USDA.
That tally is expected to grow, as U.S. authorities confirm pending cases. The outbreak, which is also affecting two Canadian provinces, shows little sign of slowing.
In Minnesota, the largest producer of U.S. turkeys, state officials said almost 5.5 million turkeys and egg-laying chickens have either died from the flu virus or are set to be killed in an effort to contain the outbreak.
In Iowa, the top U.S. egg producer, state agriculture officials said an estimated 20 million chickens and turkeys have been affected there.

U.S. Consumer, Economy Disappearing
For the past six years it seems one area of the country or another has been in "recession". Despite this phenomena, the bureaucracy continues to pump out positive news trying to justify the falsehood the recession ended in June 2009.
To be blunt, America is about to be hit, pinball fashion, from several directions at once.
Forget Detroit, look at Wayne County. Forget Stockton, look at California as a whole. Forget Vegas's housing problem and look at consumer's 'discretionary income' problem. These seemingly unrelated problems are the crux of the short-circuited agenda fostered by both Presidents Bush and Obama for economic 'recovery.'
Every new law passed by the four Congresses sitting since 2007 have all had noble sounding names. From the Toxic Asset Relief Program to the Consumer Protection Act, the buffoons walking the hallowed halls of the nation's capitol wanted you to believe they were going to look our for the average Joe and get America back on economic track through a massive redistribution of wealth by socialist programs or by putting the heat on the financial sector that failed so miserably with a huge infusion of freshly printed dollars.
In six years since the recession technically ended with Wall Street's surge we find America today has not only a once-proud city in ruination but the entire county appears to be in even worse shape. Detroit's Wayne County is officially laying out some pretty ugly options for voters to consider. Wayne County Executive Warren Evans has demanded hundreds of millions of budget cuts.
Wayne County, like many businesses, cities, counties, states and even the U.S. government, promised lavish employee benefits. This was done, not on a rational economic basis, in an effort to buy support from either the citizens or employees through their labor unions. It was predicated on the supposition that Detroit would remain the Car King of the World and that there would be a steady rise in population and product to pay for these luxury benefits.
Part of Evans' plan is to reduce salaries by 5% and eliminate or severely curtail the health care benefit for current and future retirees. This sounds like a rerun of warnings in 2008 and 2009 from many quarters.
Out on the Left Coast, Stephen Frank, publisher of California Political News and Views, wrote: "The drought is not the only thing California has to worry about. The people of California are being burdened by an unsustainable, unfunded liability--a $1 trillion government pension system. Under California law, the taxpayers will subsidize the shortfall in the budget."
He added: "California is in an economic collapse: while needed tax revenue increases, the policies to kill off the state are in place and beginning to take effect."
California thus has the same problem as Wayne County, Michigan--too much promised boons to employees without a corresponding tax base to support it.
Las Vegas has another problem entirely as outline by businessman Steve Wynn of Wynn Resorts. "Citizens do not understand the implications of an $18 trillion national debt or what it means when the Federal Reserve buys the U.S. Treasury bonds to finance our loss every month. People think that is an abstract conversation in Washington for pundits. It impacts every one of my employees, critically every day. They notice when they sit at the kitchen table that after they pay for necessities, there just isn't any money left."
So here's how the rubber meets the road for America. Every single politician, at every level is trying to figure how much more he can wrench from the worker to keep up the programs they have gradually infused us with for the past 51 years and maintain their incumbent status. Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve has so devalued the dollar, the phony inflation numbers Washington tries to pawn off are being noticed for what they are.
The consumer, for good or bad, is still the only factor that counts in the economic world. Without the consumer, where does the money to operate government come from? Without the consumer where will support come from for those reliant on a government paycheck? Without consumers, how will the financial sector remain standing?
Think of that dilemma. All government entities would be shutdown without the consumer. Yet every law passed in the last eight years has hurt the consumer instead of helping him. Cut the redundancy in government agencies. Cut them to the bone and in some cases take the bone as well. They are strangling the principles America was founded on.
There are no guarantees in life, no matter how hard politicians try to provide them. They can only do so on the back of the consumer. At some level, they must know it but their job is no longer for this vital constituency but for the freeloaders who glom onto the government handouts.
America cannot afford the freeloader any longer. Those people have to step up to the plate and take on the responsibility that goes with liberties. That, and only that, will get America's economy going again and alleviate the problems spreading coast to coast.
