OTTAWA — Such is the severity of post-recession malaise engulfing the world that CIBC's chief economist invokes Biblical comparisons to warn the end of the "famine" is years away. "Akin to Pharaoh's dream for Egypt, the global economy could well be in the midst of seven lean years, as the debt-financed bounty of the prior expansion left a growth famine in its wake," Avery Shenfeld said in his year-end economic outlook. The Pharoah's dream, contained in Genesis, portends seven years of prosperity followed by seven lean years. EU Banks 'Need Billions More To Survive Crisis'
European banks need an extra 114.7bn euros (£97.7bn) to survive the eurozone debt crisis, the region's banking authority has said. The European Banking Authority said the overall shortfall, including an emergency capital buffer, is 13.1bn euros (£11.1bn) for German banks and 7.3bn euros (£6.2bn) for French banks. Meanwhile in Spain, the shortfall comes to 26.2bn euros (£22.3bn) and 15.4bn euros (£13.1bn) for those in Italy. The banks now need to raise that capital and have until January 20 to present their plans - and until mid-June to.../

/Senate Defense Bill Repeals Military Law Against Sodomy, Sex With Animals
Recently passed Senate legislation would make sodomy and sex with animals legal under military law, ending long-standing prohibitions and triggering cries of perversion from conservative groups. The bill, which the Senate passed 93-7 last week, would repeal Article 125 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which states that any person who engages in "unnatural carnal copulation with another person of the same or opposite sex or with an animal is guilty of sodomy." Those found guilty of sodomy would be subject to court-martial.../
Texas Macy’s Employee Fired for Allegedly Violating Store’s LGBT Policy
A Texas woman claims she was fired from her job at Macy’s for telling a transgender customer that she could not change in the women’s dressing room, according to ABC News’ San Antonio affiliate KSAT. The woman, Natalie Johnson, has filed a complaint with the Federal Employment Commission, saying that her religious beliefs prevent her from recognizing transgender people, according to KSAT. Johnson, 27, was employed at the River Center Macy’s in San Antonio until last week. She said a teenager caught her attention because the teen was shopping.../

Tensions escalate along Turkish-Syrian border
Tensions have grown on the Turkish-Syrian border, where Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s army has reportedly deployed tanks as reinforcements. The reports of reinforcements on the Syrian side of the border, which appeared in the Turkish media, came days after Syrian news agency SANA reported a failed infiltration attempt from Turkey by a group of “35 armed terrorists.” SANA also said some of the enemy wounded escaped over the border and were treated by the Turkish military, a claim denied by Ankara.
