Proverbs 22:3 NLT

A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.

Cash rationed in Cyprus after eurozone inflicts losses on biggest bank

Savers at the Laiki bank and Bank of Cyprus will be hit by new cash limits of €100 a day on Monday as both financial institutions are forcibly restructured. The future of the Bank of Cyprus, the island’s largest financial institution, has been called into doubt following emergency talks between the eurozone and the International Monetary Fund on Sunday night. In the early hours of Monday morning, Cyprus agreed provisional "bail-in" plans with the eurozone and IMF, meaning depositors, including many Russians, with over €100,000 in the bank face forced losses of up to 40pc. The draft agreement means that there will be no general "stability levy" on depositors in Cypriot banks with losses restricted to uninsured deposits over €100,000 in the Bank of Cyprus and Laiki. Negotiations continued this morning on demands by the IMF...

Cypriot economy may be contagious: World Bank

BEIJING — Developing nations must be ready for a financial market selloff if the Cypriot banking sector collapses, World Bank Managing Director Sri Mulyani Indrawati said on Sunday, urging a swift resolution to the crisis in Cyprus. In an interview on the sidelines of a forum in Beijing, Indrawati said she is watching very closely the outcome of a plan to levy a one-off tax on Cypriot deposits as part of a deal to obtain a 10 billion euro bailout from the EU. Her remarks contrast with those of German politicians, who have suggested contagion from...

Perry, lawmakers want state’s gold back in Texas

Call it the Rick Perry gold rush: The governor wants to bring the state’s gold reserves back from a New York vault to Texas. And he may have legislative support to do it. Freshman Rep. Giovanni Capriglione, R-Southlake, is carrying a bill that would establish the Texas Bullion Depository, a secure state-based bank to house $1 billion worth of gold bars owned by the University of Texas Investment Management Company, or UTIMCO, and currently stored by the Federal Reserve. The idea isn’t entirely new. Some Republican members worked...

Mayor Bloomberg says he will spend millions more to defeat the National Rifle Association and pro-gun pols

The $12 million ad blitz targeting senators wavering on gun control will be just the beginning, Mayor Bloomberg warned Sunday. “I have a responsibility ... to try to make this country safer,” Bloomberg said on “Meet the Press” when asked if he’d spend big-time in next year’s elections to target the National Rifle Association and members of Congress for opposing gun restrictions. “If I can do that by spending some money, and taking the NRA from being the only voice to being one of the voices, so the public can really understand the issues, then I think my...

What lies beneath: When sinkholes turn deadly

ONE month after a sinkhole swallowed and killed a man as he dozed in his bedroom, another has opened up in the same suburb, forcing residents to evacuate. Authorities say a sinkhole opened between two homes in Seffner on Saturday night and the houses have been evacuated as a precaution. Hillsborough County Fire Rescue spokeswoman Jessica Damico told The Miami Herald the hole was estimated at 3m across and more than 3m deep. The new hole is about 3km from where Jeff Bush was swallowed up by a hole on the night of February...
