Proverbs 22:3 NLT

A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.

Brazil: giant earth fissure 7 km opened in Serra Geral de Goiás, Correntina

Prosecutor Douglas Roberto Ribeiro investigates the reasons for the disaster, which occurred in late February, on the border of the municipalities of São Domingos and Campos Belos, in the northeast of the Goiás State. Since yesterday (14/3) expert survey places of disasters caused by the collapse of the land. The prosecutor, inclusive, visited the disaster areas and collected samples of water and land, which could be contaminated by the chemicals and pesticides. With the collapse the flow of mud, ground and stones opened a crater nearly 7 km long and nearly 200 meters wide, on east of the Mosquito river, one of the most important in the north-east of Goiás and south-east of Tocantins. A landslide has reached the River São Vicente, which flows through the Park Terra Ronca Estadual, the most extensive area of environmental protection in Goias, nearly 60 thousand hectares, threatening the population of fish and cave complex of São Vicente. Cyprus bailout: 'people are panicking, they're afraid of losing their money'

Under the palm trees of Larnaca's waterfront promenade, George Kyprou was staring out to sea and scratching his head. "I don't know what to do," he said. Like most Cypriots, he was astonished to wake up one bank holiday weekend morning to discover the government had seized up to 10% of everyone's savings from their bank accounts without warning. Kyprou, 62, born in Larnaca, had worked most of his life as a chauffeur and driver in England, proudly buying his London council flat and scrimping to put aside money in Cyprus for when he returned for holidays and eventually to retire. "I'd put aside £50 here, £20 there, all my life," he said. Over decades, he had built up around €6,000 (£5,200) in a Larnaca account. "It was a state building society; I assumed it was safe." But now, as depositors holding less than...

Tehran: Our commanders now authorized to open fire. Go home, Obama!

The words and deeds coming out of Washington in the last three days bring little comfort to the Israeli government as it prepares for Barack Obama’s first visit as president Wednesday, March 20. According to an authoritative leak, Washington has effectively cancelled the Europe-based missile shield system that was designed to protect that continent and Israel against Iranian ballistic missile attack. The cancellation was part of the plan announced by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel last week to install 14 additional missile interceptors in California and...

More locusts descend upon Israel

A large swarm of locusts invaded Israel on Saturday from the Sinai Peninsula. The swarm is heading from Shivta to Ashalim in the Ramat Negev Regional Council in southern Israel. The Agriculture Ministry stated that the area where the locust will rest will be sprayed with pesticides Sunday morning. "We will be seeing locusts on a daily basis in the foreseeable future," a ministry official said. "But gladly we have the situation under control due to readiness and hard work." Ramat Negev Council head Shmulik Rifman was less optimistic. "The locust...

Record cesium level detected in fish caught near Fukushima nuclear plant

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Friday it detected a record 740,000 becquerels per kilogram of radioactive cesium in a fish caught in waters near the crippled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, equivalent to 7,400 times the state-set limit deemed safe for human consumption. The greenling measuring 38 cm in length and weighing 564 grams was caught near a water intake of the four reactor units in the power station’s port on Feb. 21 during the utility’s operation to remove fish from the port. Tepco has installed a net on the sea...

NRA opposes U.N. arms treaty

The National Rifle Association, which is battling a raft of gun control measures on Capitol Hill, also has an international fight on its hand as it gears up to oppose a U.N. treaty designed to restrict the flow of arms to conflict zones. Negotiations open Monday in New York on the Arms Trade Treaty, which would require countries to determine whether weapons they sell would be used to commit serious human rights violations, terrorism or transnational organized crime. The gun lobby fears that the treaty would be used to regulate civilian weapons. Human rights...

Madonna Chastises Boy Scouts Over Stance on Gays During GLAAD Awards…While Wearing This Bizarre Outfit

NEW YORK (TheBlaze/AP) — Wearing a replica of one of the organization’s uniforms, Madonna called on the Boy Scouts to lift its ban on gays while also calling for a “revolution” to prevent discrimination and abuse of the gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual community. Speaking Saturday night at the GLAAD Media Awards, Madonna started off in a mischievous mood. She joked that she wanted to become a part of the Boy Scouts herself, but was turned down, even though she had the qualifications. “I can build a fire. I know how to pitch...

Pope Francis tells Vatican to prepare for change

The Vatileaks scandal of last year, in which Benedict XVI's butler was caught stealing and leaking documents to the press, revealed infighting, nepotism and alleged corruption within the Curia, governing body. On Saturday, the Pope ruled that senior administrators in the Vatican bureaucracy will temporarily keep their posts while he studies what changes may be required. Hopes for sweeping reforms of the Curia were bolstered by the language of an announcement that its members would "provisionally stay in their respective posts until it is decided...

Obama-Satan Resemblance on ‘The Bible’ Fuels Social Media Firestorm

WASHINGTON, March 18 (RIA Novosti) – Cable television’s History Channel miniseries “The Bible” has created a social media firestorm in the United States after viewers of Sunday night’s episode took to Facebook and Twitter noticing an uncanny resemblance between the character Satan and US President Barack Obama. Conservative television host Glenn Beck tweeted his observations in a post that was shared hundreds of times across the micro-blogging site. Helping to fuel the argument that Ouazanni was intentionally made up to look like the...

German Economist: 'Europe's Citizens Now Have to Fear for Their Money'

For the first time, bank customers in a crisis-plagued euro-zone country are being forced to contribute to its bailout. In an interview, German economist Peter Bofinger warns the strategy is "extremely dangerous" and could lead to a run on banks. SPIEGEL ONLINE: Mr. Bofinger, Cyprus will be saved -- and every Cypriot bank customer will have to pay up. Whether that person is Greek or Russian, whether they have €1,000 or €10 million in their account, part of that person's savings will be taken. Is this a good strategy? Bofinger: It is the worst...

Meet Obama’s Pick for Labor Secretary: ‘A Radical’s Radical’, Says Former DOJ Attorney

WASHINGTON (TheBlaze/AP) — President Barack Obama gave a glowing rollout Monday to Thomas Perez, his choice to lead the Labor Department after an aggressive stint as the nation’s chief civil rights enforcer. But the nomination quickly ran into trouble as a Republican senator declared he would block the nomination until GOP concerns about Perez’s Justice Department tenure are addressed. Further, former DOJ attorney J. Christian Adams alleged that Perez a “radical’s radical” in an interview on Mark Levin’s radio show...

North Carolina church vows to stop marriages until same-sex couples can wed

A church in North Carolina will stop performing marriages until United Methodist pastors are allowed to officiate weddings for same-sex couples in the Tar Heel state. The Green Street United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem made the announcement on its Facebook page on Friday and held a press conference on Sunday detailing its plan. The Rev. Kelly Carpenter told FoxNews.com on Monday that his 400-member congregation and its 18-member Leadership Council have long considered the move. “Many people in our church have been very...

Astronomers gearing up for possible 'comet of the century'

Astronomers are already getting set for the arrival of Comet ISON, which may become one of the brightest comets ever seen when it cruises through the inner solar system this fall. NASA has brought together a small team of experts to organize an observing campaign for Comet ISON, which could potentially shine as brightly as the moon when it makes its closest pass by the sun in late November if the most optimistic scenarios play out. Coordinating the efforts of observatories on the ground and in space should help wring as much quality science...

Is this interactive avatar the face of the future?

A virtual "talking head" which can express a range of human emotions and could be used as a digital personal assistant has been developed by researchers in Cambridge. According to its designers, Zoe is the most expressive controllable avatar ever created, and could be used on mobile phones or tablets. The result of several days filming with an actress, the face can display emotions such as happiness, anger and fear, and changes its voice to suit the user's preference. Rory Cellan-Jones went to meet the team behind Zoe and find out how they...

Nations gather for final U.N. arms trade treaty negotiations

Arms control campaigners and human rights advocates say one person every minute dies worldwide as a result of armed violence, and that a treaty is needed to halt the uncontrolled flow of weapons and ammunition that they argue helps fuel wars, atrocities and rights abuses. The U.N. General Assembly voted in December to relaunch negotiations this week on what could become the first global treaty to regulate the world's $70 billion trade for all conventional weapons - from naval ships, tanks and attack helicopters to handguns and assault...

Swine flu 'growing in resistance' to Tamiflu

Virologists at the World Health Organisation (WHO) have found about two per cent of H1N1 cases are now resistant to the anti-viral. Many of these patients have never taken Tamiflu, meaning they must have contracted a form of the virus from another person, which was already resistant. The finding, presented at the annual conference of the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases in Canberra, are worrying because the drug is considered a main line of defence against swine flu. In the summer 2009 the virus caused a pandemic after...
