The Obama Administration is in full protection mode after the President's gaff last week of golfing immediately after making an alleged heart-felt, somber statement about the death of reporter James Foley.

That gave Americans the perception the mass media was finally starting to see through the glib-talking Obama façade to the hollow, shallow man underneath.

That was a fleeting hope. The media is focused on the single episode and keeps missing the fact this was just the latest in a long line of such events. Most of those judgment errors will hit America in the pocketbook because, like the hollow man he is, other Obama-inspired actions since he's been President are about to come home to roost.

Start with the biggest gaffe, the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare. Despite the bungled rollout, the Administration did collect 8.2 million hits onto the website. It counted all of those as enrollees. That was an error as about 30% haven't paid yet and as many as another 15% haven't finished the forms necessary to get signed up for insurance.

It was in the 47% that received tax credits or subsidies that the real problem is going to enter. Those people jumped into the pool expecting someone else to cover the vast majority of their insurance costs. They bit believing they would receive "something for nothing." George Brandes, vice president for Health Care programs at Hewitt Jackson Tax Service, estimates 7 million households have received tax credits this year. In the meantime many of those have had a change in income. That could lead to problems when they file their tax returns next spring.

Two computations show the potential liability exposure to penalties and interest those families face. First, based on insurance reports, the average tax credit for subsidized coverage is $264 per month or $3,170 for a year. Second, the average tax refund is $2,690. But the average tax refund for those whose financial income would allow them to qualify for a subsidy is (less the Earned Income Credit) just over $800. Missing your tax payment by even 10% can costs hundreds of dollars. Missing it by more than 5% can lead to additional penalties and interest charges from the IRS.

Brandes noted, "More than a third of tax credit recipients will definitely owe some money and that will lead to hefty repayment liabilities. Any time delays will diminish the ability to adjust to their true tax situation."

Look at it like a payday loan that is so popular these days. You borrow a hundred to get to the next paycheck. Now you face the choice of repaying and not getting through the next pay period or allowing the interest (which can reach 240% APR) to accumulate. Many people pay the loan back but then borrow again to get through the next pay cycle. Each time they must borrow a bit more because they do not make the tough choice to cut their living style to stretch the income through the period. Obamacare does not give anyone the choice to opt out without paying some penalties.

The Obama Administration contends it is making a constant effort to inform newly-insured people to report income changes that could affect their coverage. This is true. But the message doesn't push the point about tax refunds or additional government assessments at tax-filing time. That should be the IRS's responsibility as it is the collector but the agency isn't set up to do this and is all about generating more revenue anyway, not informing the masses about a way to lower their tax bill.

The real clue as to how this subsidy will affect the average household comes in the tax form guidelines. Many of those who qualify for subsidies file the 1040EZ. If there is a subsidy involved for the reporting entity, that form cannot be used.

There are various income thresholds but the manner in which people who have more income than is justified to get subsidies can divert excess income into an IRA to keep the subsidy. And the fact the IRS is in charge has added another wrinkle. Many Americans think the IRS can only attach the refund applied for to collect for health care subsidy errors. If the refund is less than the amount the IRS calculates you owe, you have to write a check. Right now, without the option to go onto a payment plan as those leniencies for infractions under Obamacare do not currently exist.

To mention some of the other errors now showing in our economy look at housing. July was the best month for housing starts in seven years growing to almost 1.09 million for an annual pace. That was splashed across every news desk. Now the July number of sales for housing are trickling in and new home sales declined to an annual rate 412,000. That sorry fact didn't even make the late news.

The question missed is: if they are building more than 600,000 more units than what are being sold, what affect will that have on "home values"? This is still a supply and demand commodity. The overbuilding of the mid-2000s is what led to the recession in the first place. We are right back at it.

These two areas alone, Obamacare and housing troubles, project the picture of an Administration that is clueless about the real world while trying to paint a picture of what it thinks the world should be like.

The pattern cannot be continued without severe consequences. So while the President put on the somber face after the beheading of a reporter and only long enough to get news coverage, the fact it was only an act rings loudest with Americans. Toss in the other problems and the disconnect between the responsibilities of the job and the perks of the job are quite apparent.

Obama loves to flaunt the perks but he sidesteps the responsibilities as sometimes those responsibilities interfere with the perks. Obama hasn't yet learned that is the reality of being President and not the pretty picture he tries to portray.
