Stock Market Bubble Gets Larger
Wall Street is rolling as the stock markets close in on new, all-time highs. You would think that is a solid recommendation for the economic prospects of America, right?
You would be almost dead right if we were talking as short a time as two decades ago. But a lot has changed, particularly from central bank involvement and a corresponding drop in individual investment during the same time period.
The dotcom crash of 2000 stunned a lot of households but didn't shake their faith in the system. The housing bust of 2007 had effects few could cope with. Before and during the dotcom bubble, people flooded the markets, seeking a dependable return higher than the one the local bank was offering. Even after that shock, people reassured themselves this was a sector blow and not an indicator of a slowing economy and Wall Street rapidly regained daily sales volumes.
But the housing crash took people's faith away and the struggling economy was evident for all to see if they looked. Nowhere was the change felt more than on Wall Street. If the government had not stepped in and bolstered the financial sector the DJIA would be hovering below the 5,000 level and the S&P 500 would be no more than 800.
The Fed ran its printing press, government spent money in a wild stab to slow the recession's effects and people adjusted to a new level of uncertainty in their life.
But a funny thing happened on Wall Street. There the trade volumes fell and still haven't recovered. The smaller volume means each trade has more impact on the indices' rise or fall than ever before.
Marc Faber, publisher of The Gloom, Boom and Doom Report, noted this phenomena recently. "The composition of an index," he said, "is that is usually capitalization weighted. So one stock that goes up could drive up an index even while 99% of the remaining shares don't gain anything. We had a strong day (Monday Nov. 2) on Wall Street but on the NYSE, out of more than 3,000 companies being traded less than 12 recorded a yearly high. The advance is very narrow."
CNBC noted "Global central banks have created easy liquidity in markets via zero interest rate policies (ZIRP) and sometimes negative rate policies as well as through asset purchases. That has driven up prices across a range of assets."
The fears unexpressed in both cases were the price of stocks is not being accomplished through increased sales or profits but by the artificial boost from moonbeam valued printed fiat.
This worrisome aspect of the markets' unexplainable bull run has now crept into the two-year long presidential race. No less a market-manipulating expert than Donald Trump added his voice to this problem. He, however, ID'd the victims. "People who practice the American Dream and did what should have been done the right way--people who went through 40 years of their working life and saved a hundred bucks a week (in the bank) for retirement are now, unwillingly, being forced into an inflated, bubble ridden stock market and at some point they'll get wiped out."
This is why the 401(k) so wildly lauded by the Beltway is a dragon waiting to pounce. Too many people with either a 401(k) or with an employee-backed pension plan, have had those plans invest in the stock market. They invested in the dubious market to pay out the pie-in-the-sky returns they had promised workers in order to get them to invest in the plans and make them worthwhile.
It has been estimated a bubble burst now, could erase as much as $170 billion from 35 major American cities' GDP. That's not accurate because what they really mean is $170 billion worth of service jobs would go into the twilight. The actual crash and burn is probably going to be 40 times that high for the major cities and their accompanying government works programs which form a backbone of activity since American cities have little Gross Domestic Product to lose anymore.
Can this economy, can this rigged stock market, withstand the shock of maybe a $10 trillion contraction because of stock market losses?
What is very troubling is this impact will be greater than any projected impact from another 9-11 attack or natural disasters according to Lloyd's of London.
Determine where your future income will come from when this latest, central bank-created beast implodes. The phony rise in the markets provided a technical base for the government to claim the recession ended in June, 2009. But the gloomy pall has not been lifted from Main Streets in most places. They are still feeling the effects daily.
The lack of substance, the lack of a solid base for the markets' rise should be raising red flags across the board. But those in the industry expect the 99% to bail them out again if it happens.
America is tapping out in this fight. We can't take another blow to the wallet and Main Street knows it even if government economists have not acknowledged it publicly.

The New American - Citizens of Coos County, Oregon, decided on November 3 that they consider their right to keep and bear arms beyond the reach of the federal government. Specifically, voters approved a bill that authorizes the Coos County sheriff to interpose between the people of his county and any state or federal act that would infringe upon the rights protected by the Second Amendment.
