The cyborgs are coming! Living brains implanted with electronic chips to replace 'faulty' parts
...researchers at Tel Aviv University have successfully created circuits that can replace motor functions - such as blinking - and implanted them into brains. They hope the technology could in the future help people suffering from brain malfunctions such as Parkinson's disease - by replacing damaged or malfunctioning tissue with chips that perform the same function.

Up to 6.7 million bats dead of fungus
"White-nose syndrome has spread quickly through bat populations in eastern North America, and has caused significant mortality in many colonies," said Dr. Jeremy Coleman, co-ordinator of the U.S white-nose syndrome program. Russia Investigates Claim That US Radar Doomed Mars Probe

Russian space officials are investigating whether interference from an American radar station may have led to the demise of a failed Mars probe that fell back to Earth on Sunday (Jan. 17), according to media reports. The unmanned Russian Phobos-Grunt spacecraft suffered a crippling malfunction shortly after launch, which stranded it in low-Earth orbit instead of sending it on toward Mars. After being marooned in orbit for more than two months, the dead spacecraft plunged through Earth's atmosphere Sunday, showering debris over the Pacific Ocean.

World Bank lowers global growth outlook

THE World Bank has slashed growth forecasts, warning that the global economy could be thrown into a worse recession than it faced during the global financial crisis. In its latest briefing on global economic prospects, the bank said that the world economy had entered a new and difficult phase characterised by “significant downside risks and fragility”. “While contained for the moment, the risk of a much broader freezing up of capital markets and a global crisis similar in magnitude to the Lehman crisis remains,'' it said. “The world could be thrown into a...

Treasury dips into pension funds to avoid debt

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Treasury on Tuesday started dipping into federal pension funds in order to give the Obama administration more credit to pay government bills. "I will be unable to invest fully" the federal employees retirement system fund beginning Tuesday, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said in a letter to Democratic and Republican leaders in Congress. The House of Representatives is expected to vote on Wednesday on the Obama administration's request to raise the country's legal debt limit to $16.394 trillion...

Artificial meat grown in a lab could become a reality THIS year

Scientists have figured out the riddle of growing meat in a laboratory and are now just working out how they can make it profitable, it has been claimed. Some 30 teams around the world are working on growing meat in petri dishes, as investment and research talent is poured into a technology that could solve world hunger. Produced in huge vats from muscle cells, the ‘meat without slaughter’ would be kinder to the environment than the real thing and reduce animal suffering. Animal welfare group Peta have promised a $1million reward to any scientist...
